The other day I shared a picture of the spreadsheet that I used to plan for an upcoming trip to Japan, and so many of you loved it and asked for a copy!

Ask and you shall receive! I'll be sharing a copy of the spreadsheet for free, as well as instruction on how to use it and the customisations available that you can make for your trip.

CUSTOMISATIONS

Category Options

The options shown in the dropdown are configurable and can be customised to your trip by:

  1. Clicking on the dropdown, then selecting the Pencil / Edit button, which will open a side panel on the right hand side

  2. For each option, you can rename the category by typing in the field, drag and reorder the position in the dropdown, change the background colour, or delete it

  3. Add more options onto the dropdown by selecting the "Add another item" button

  4. Save and apply your changes by hitting the "Done" button when you're ready

CUSTOMISATIONS

Add a "Place Smart Chip"

Place smart chips are added to each place so that I can view the address, map and images directly in the spreadsheet without searching it separately on Google Maps.

To add a smart chip, go to an empty cell then type in "@" followed by the location - e.g. "@Sydney" - a drop down will then show with suggested results. Select the result you want, and the chip will be shown on the cell.

CUSTOMISATIONS

Automatically convert currency

I added an automatic currency conversion into the spreadsheet so I can budget and review the costs for each activity in my local currency.

This is the formula I used to convert Japanese Yen to Australian Dollars:

=GOOGLEFINANCE("CURRENCY:JPYAUD")*G2

To change this formula for your travels:

  • Change "JPY" to your destination's currency

  • Change "AUD" to your local currency

  • Update the formula for the entire column

Prioritise your plan

As much as I want to go everywhere, there's a limited amount of time and budget, so I've prioritised my list so I can focus on the ones that will mean the most to me.

To set the priority, I use a drop down of different coloured and amounts of hearts. You can configure the drop down the same way as the categories which was outlined above.
